A quickly growing plastic surgery trend is the concept of a “mommy makeover.” This is a blanket term which covers a number of procedures—many of which that can often be performed during the same operation—intended to restore and rejuvenate the body after childbirth. Many women have found a great deal of benefit in procedures such as tummy tucks or breast lifts in order to return their bodies to a pre-pregnancy state.
Tummy tucks are procedures which involve the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Since the hormonal levels of women who have just given birth are higher than normal, it’s best to wait about six months after childbirth before having this procedure conducted. This is because the hormones that are produced after childbirth and while breastfeeding can contribute to skin elasticity, and time will give the skin an opportunity to normalize. However, when the time is right, many women have found that a tummy tuck can provide a much-desired aesthetic appeal to their abdomen.
Breast Lift or Augmentation
Breast lifts are different than breast augmentations, but both are common as part of a “mommy makeover” and are procedures which may be able to be conducted at the same time as other post-pregnancy procedures. A breast lift involves the removal of excess skin to smooth, reshape, and lift the breasts, and may also include the shifting of the nipple and areola for a more natural look. A breast augmentation involves the insertion of an implant behind the skin and tissue of the breast to reshape and enlarge it. For mothers who have “sagging” or drooping breasts after childbirth and breastfeeding, this can help to restore the previous appearance of the breasts.
Body Contouring Through Liposuction
Liposuction is an effective cosmetic surgery procedure. It can be used to resize and reshape the body, and can be highly targeted. Liposuction will often accompany a tummy tuck to further shape the abdomen and is very effective at removing “stubborn” pockets of fat which don’t seem to go away naturally through normal weight loss practices. This procedure can also be performed on nearly any other part of the body with an excess of fat, such as the thighs or buttocks.
Vaginal rejuvenation procedures as part of a “mommy makeover” are more common than you might expect—given the subject matter, many women may not be prone to discussing it, but procedures like a labiaplasty can reshape the labia. After childbirth, this can aid in returning the vagina to its previous state. Some women have reported that it’s not all about looks either—labiaplasty can make clothing more comfortable and reduce irritation during physical activities.
Brazilian Butt Lift
A “Brazilian Butt Lift,” sometimes simply referred to as a BBL, is a process of buttock augmentation which uses fat harvested from the patient’s own body—rather than a synthetic injectable or an implant, fat typically sourced from the abdomen or thighs is relocated to the buttocks. It can make flat, sagging, or asymmetrical buttocks appear to be more round and/or prominent, and has been successfully administered to many women post-pregnancy who felt that their buttocks were disproportionate to the rest of their body.
