What Is A “Mommy Makeover” And Is It Right For Me?

What Is A Mommy Makeover

A “mommy makeover” is a relatively new concept, but it employs tried-and-true cosmetic surgeries.

The ultimate goal with one of these makeovers is to return a mother’s body and aesthetic appeal to the condition it was in prior to pregnancy and childbirth.

As any mother will tell you, these processes take a toll on the body—particularly in the abdomen, breasts, and yes, the genitals.

It’s important to remember that a “mommy makeover” is just a term that refers to some common procedures that might be performed at the same time for a patient.
You’re free to mix and match the procedures which would benefit you most. A consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon will likely be the best possible way of discovering all of your options and having your questions answered.
For now, let’s explore some common “mommy makeover” procedures.

Important Considerations Before Post-Pregnancy Cosmetic Surgery

While a makeover of this kind can and has been very beneficial for many mothers, there are a few considerations to keep in mind before doing so.

The first and the most important is whether or not you plan on having more children—a “mommy makeover” should only come after you’ve decided that you’re done having children.

After all, much of this work will generally be to correct the rigours of pregnancy on the body, and so if you’re planning on getting pregnant again in the future, it will almost always be better to wait until after that point.

Additionally, as with any surgery—cosmetic or otherwise—you must be in good general health. If you have a condition like a blood disorder or an autoimmune disease, elective surgeries are usually inadvisable.

Common “Mommy Makeover” Procedures

Tummy Tuck

Since pregnancy takes a toll on the skin and fat deposits of the abdomen, a tummy tuck is most frequently a part of a “mommy makeover.” A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) involves the removal of excess, unnecessary skin and fat around the stomach. These kinds of procedures are very common after pregnancy and can flatten and smooth the stomach area.

Breast Lift/Augmentation

Similarly, breast lift involves the removal of excess skin around the breasts. This can tighten the skin and thus raise the position of the breasts for a more “perky” appearance. The nipple and areola are also generally shifted to a higher position on the breast so that it appears more natural. While a breast lift can reshape and resize the breast to some degree, breast augmentation involves the insertion of an implant behind the skin and tissue of the breast to enlarge and reshape it.

Body Contouring

Body contouring through liposuction is often used in conjunction with a tummy tuck but maybe a part of the overall procedure involving a breast lift or augmentation as well. However, liposuction is not just for the abdominal or breast areas of the body—it is highly effective at also reshaping other parts of the body like the thighs or hips. Liposuction is also commonly conducted on parts on or near the face, such as the cheeks or chin.

Consulting with a qualified medical professional about your eligibility for a “mommy makeover” will help you get your questions answered and find out which of these individual procedures will benefit you the most.
