There are a number of non-invasive body contouring treatments available to patients now that do not have the same risks as surgical procedures and require no recovery or downtime. These procedures are usually best for patients that are close to or have achieved their ideal weight and would like a treatment that is complementary to their health and fitness goals; taking away the last few stubborn pounds, tightening loose skin, or contouring their overall figure.
CoolSculpting has long been developing a reputation for being a fast, painless, and effective way to remove stubborn fat, and has long been an incredibly popular method for people looking to reduce stubborn pockets of fat found in the area of their abdomen, hips, flanks, and thighs. The creators of CoolSculpting, however, recognized that this resilient fat can also remain beneath the chin, a place that is not as easy to hide with clothing. This is why they developed a new applicator, which is smaller in size, specifically to be used on the chin and neck areas. The procedure works by using CoolSculpting’s new smaller applicator, which, like its larger variant, sucks in about 2 inches of fat on the treatment area at a time. Once this short process is complete, the temperature inside the chamber drops significantly until the fat cells are permanently destroyed. This treatment requires no anesthetic and the patient is free to go home or even back to work the same day. Most patients that have a CoolSculpting procedure undergo the treatment while reading, watching television, catching up on emails or simply relaxing.
In 2015 the FDA approved a drug called Belkyra, also known in the United States as Kybella, which is similar to a naturally occurring chemical in the body called deoxycholic acid – a substance that helps to absorb fats. This injectable drug can be a great alternative to more invasive procedures such as liposuction.
The drug is injected into the targeted area and, depending on the size of the area being treated, patients may need 15-20 injections per visit and 6 treatments may be necessary one month apart or less. Much like with CoolSculpting, there is no downtime for recovery following the procedure, however, there are some side effects to be noted when using this treatment which can include swelling and bruising at the injection sites, numbness and small firm spots around the treated area. Belkyra works best on smaller areas so the stomach and love handles are best left to other treatments such as CoolSculpting.
Every patient is unique and a consultation and an assessment is the best way to determine the best non-invasive treatment for a double chin or a neck rejuvenation. The highly skilled team of professionals at the Calgary Institute for Plastic Surgery can help guide patients through treatment options or create customized treatment plans that will address their individual concerns and achieve their aesthetic goals. An assessment is also a great opportunity to ask any questions concerning the treatments directly. To learn more about CoolSculpting or Belkyra treatments contact the clinic at (403)286-4263.
